broderie suédoise

The traditional Swedish embroidery is a simple and decorative technique primarily using the running stitch. The embroidery thread is alternately passed over and under the warp and weft threads of the fabric. It remains visible on the surface, giving the embroidery a nice weaving effect.

Thanks to the linearity of its stitches, Swedish embroidery allows for the creation of numerous geometric and repetitive patterns, from the simplest to the most elaborate. It can be done on different fabrics, provided that the warp and weft threads are sufficiently visible to guide the passage of the thread.

Traditionally, this embroidery was used to embellish everyday objects and household linens: tablecloths, napkins, runners, bedspreads, towels, and many other works.

Today, Swedish embroidery also lends itself to much more contemporary creations. It can decorate fashion accessories and decorative objects and be combined with beads, sequins, rhinestones, or even stitches from traditional embroidery. The mix of threads, materials, textures, and fabrics allows for the renewal of this technique while maintaining its very particular graphic character.

Patterns are generally worked in rows. While the traditional method recommends starting in the center with a long thread to embroider an entire line, a more modern approach allows for the use of shorter lengths of thread that are easier to handle. This limits the risk of knots and repeated friction that can alter the thickness and shine of certain threads.
