Laine Saint-Pierre – darning and embroidery thread

Laine Saint-Pierre is an iconic French thread from traditional haberdashery, appreciated for many years for its strength, versatility, and rich colors.

Initially designed as a darning wool, it is now also highly valued for traditional embroidery, cross-stitch, tapestry, creative mending, and visible mending.

Composition and structure

Laine Saint-Pierre is composed of:

  • 50% wool

  • 50% polyamide

The combination of wool and polyamide provides both the softness and warm appearance of wool, as well as good resistance to wear and friction, particularly interesting for darning.

The thread consists of 4 separable strands, allowing easy adjustment of its thickness to the support, the stitch used, and the desired result.

A versatile thread for embroidery

Thanks to its separable strands, Laine Saint-Pierre can be used for many needlework projects.

It is particularly suitable for traditional embroidery, cross-stitch, embroidery on fabric or canvas, and various decorative works made with wool.

By using a different number of strands, it is possible to play with volumes and effects: a few strands for the finest details or all strands to achieve more relief and coverage.

Its matte and slightly rustic appearance gives the works a warm, authentic look, particularly suited to traditionally inspired embroideries.

Darning and visible mending

Laine Saint-Pierre is historically a darning wool. Its resistance makes it a particularly suitable thread for repairing woolen garments and accessories: sweaters, cardigans, socks, and other knitted pieces.

It also naturally finds its place in visible mending, a technique that transforms a repair into a true decorative element. The darns, patterns, and embroidery stitches then become intentionally visible, allowing for personalization or giving new life to textiles.

A traditional French wool

Laine Saint-Pierre is part of the heritage of French haberdashery. Now associated with the house Fil Au Chinois, it perpetuates the know-how of traditional French haberdashery threads.

Its wide range of colors allows for both discreet repairs, by finding a shade close to the original textile, and creating colorful contrasts for embroidery and decorative mending.

Characteristics:

  • Composition: 50% wool – 50% polyamide

  • Thread composed of 4 separable strands

  • Matte and warm appearance

  • Good resistance to wear

  • French manufacturing
