Saint-Pierre Wool – Darning and Embroidery Thread

The Saint-Pierre Wool is an iconic French thread from traditional haberdashery, appreciated for many years for its strength, versatility, and rich colors.

Originally designed as a darning wool, it is now also highly valued for traditional embroidery, cross-stitch, tapestry, creative mending, and visible mending.

Composition and Structure

The Saint-Pierre Wool is composed of:

  • 50% wool

  • 50% polyamide

The combination of wool and polyamide provides both the softness and warmth of wool, as well as a good resistance to wear and friction, which is particularly interesting for darning.

The thread consists of 4 separable strands, allowing for easy adjustment of its thickness to the support, the stitch used, and the desired result.

A Versatile Thread for Embroidery

Thanks to its separable strands, the Saint-Pierre Wool can be used for many needlework projects.

It is particularly suitable for traditional embroidery, cross-stitch, embroidery on canvas or fabric, and various decorative works made with wool.

By using a different number of strands, it is possible to play with volumes and effects: a few strands for the finest details or all strands for more relief and coverage.

Its matte and slightly rustic appearance gives projects a warm, authentic look, particularly suited for traditionally inspired embroidery.

Darning and Visible Mending

The Saint-Pierre Wool is historically a darning wool. Its durability makes it particularly suitable for repairing woolen garments and accessories: sweaters, vests, socks, and other knitted pieces.

It also naturally fits into visible mending, a technique that transforms a repair into a true decorative element. The repairs, patterns, and embroidery stitches become intentionally visible and allow for personalizing or giving new life to textiles.

A Traditional French Wool

The Saint-Pierre Wool is part of the heritage of French haberdashery. Today associated with the house Fil Au Chinois, it perpetuates the craftsmanship of traditional French haberdashery threads.

Its wide palette of colors allows for both discreet repairs, seeking a shade close to the original textile, and creating colorful contrasts for embroidery and decorative mending.
